What To Do with Vegan Inmates?

Most prisons don’t have vegan meal options, but your standard animal-based dishes.

Recently a criminal by the name of Love Sky Dancer (of course) was incarcerated, and as a vegan, he requested he be sent to a prison where vegan meal options exist.  Apparently the penal system in London accomodates vegan inmates. The judge approved the request, and Love Sky Dancer is now in London.

So should vegans be allowed to transport to vegan-friendly prisons? Was the judge right in accomodating Love Sky Dancer? What should the American penal system do with Vegan Inmates?

I don’t have an answer, but it certainly is an interesting question. Where do they draw the line on whose dietary preferences should be accommodated in prisons? Should religious dietary restrictions be honored? Food allergies? Raw foodism?

The prison system should provide three healthy meals per day to the prison population as a whole. They don’t need to be catering to everyone’s individual needs. If a prisoner doesn’t want to eat the meatloaf, they should be allowed to take extra broccoli. If you want your dietary preferences catered to, don’t do the crime.

Lisa, if the prison is going to keep people in confinement… No matter what that person did its their right and the prisons responsibility to feed that person. Sorry but you won’t last long with a 5 year sentence and all you can eat is broccoli. As a vegan I would fully expect to be offered an alternative if I was ever incarcerated. And I am glad that the man got sent to a vegan friendly jail. Plus a vegan probably isn’t going to jail for anything bad… Unless you think standing up for animals who are innocent and defenceless is a criminal offence.

Thanxs for all the comments guys. This is an interesting (and ongoing) discussion and fact is there are no easy answers.

    Keep the discussion going.

It’s pretty ridiculous to say that a vegan wouldn’t be going to jail for anything bad… I mean, wasn’t Hitler a vegetarian? Some people are just messed up. And maybe if they murdered someone or something like that, they deserve to be forced to eat meat. That is a terrible punishment all on it’s own.

I doubt that chocolate is vegan, I’m sure it has the chance at traces of milk products.
