Your Fave Green Social Networking Site Is?
I am wanting to participate more in the green social space, but the options are seriously lacking for us. I belong to the green social bookmarking sites listed below, but am not crazy about any of them.
Which do you use? Do you submit stories daily? How do you feel about creating an alliance, in where we hook up, and help each other out. As you know these social networking sites, are useless without a web of friends.
The Green Social Sites I Use
Hugg – Green digg like site owned by TreeHugger.
CON: Ever since their re-design, well it just lacks alot of things. For one, there is no friending feature. Second, no forward this to someone feature. It really is very web .5, not at all web 2.0
PRO: But the good thing about Hugg, is that you only need a handful of votes to make it to front page. This is very doable.
Twitter - Aside from chit chatting on Twitter, one can also make a post go viral on there.
PRO: One can re-tweet someone else’s twit, and therein lies the viral beauty of Twitter. Depending on how many friends one has, this can be pretty good exposure.
CON: The number (and types) of friends you have, ultimately decide the fate of your posts. The more greenies you have, the better. I definitely need more green friends on Twitter, so if you’re a veggie or eco friendly, follow me.
Digg (the environment section)
CON: Making it to the front page here, is like hitting pay dirt. Well, for a day or two.
PRO: Extremely hard to make it to the front page. You need gobs of friends, precious hours of the day voting, commenting, and networking. There is a very specific crowd of people on Digg, they are VERY hard to please, quite jaded, and super savvy about social networks. A great big beast of a challenge! One day i will crack it.
Kirsty – digg like site by and for women
PRO: Great community of ladies who vote up their faves in organic food, eco friendly fashions, green celebs, sustainable home improvement, easy and affordable DIY, and recycled product shopping.
The front page stories here scream “i need help”, “i need help”. Help me with stuff. The ladies at Kirtsy are looking for ways, methods, tips, and tricks to make life easier, better, faster, or more manageable.
CON: There is a clique at Kirtsy, you need to be “one of the girls” to make your storys appear on the front page. Lots of daily participation is required, and again the right type of friends is key.
I like the Kirtsy site, alot of good stories are submitted by members, and shared. I’m a fan.
Reader Questions (+Poll)
Please weigh in below, and tell me, what is your fave green social bookmarking site? Is it a niche and small green site, or one of the big sites, like Digg? Is there a vegetarian/vegan specific social networking site, i should know about? Shoud we form a small group alliance, to help each other out?
Let’s talk.

I use the Greenbar – Its a green toolbar. I think it was just launched a few weeks ago, but it’s been written up a few times. This is the homepage:

Hi, Scott: Will check out The Green Toolbar. This is one green social site, i have not heard of before.
Thanxs for the tip.
In my opinion, Digg is definitely THE social news site. It does get spammed, it is highly possible it has a burry brigade but I don’t know any other social news site where to find so many good stories on the front page.

Well Digg is the biggest and most popular social bookmarking site, but i was referring to GREEN social sites.
I’m having the same problems. I just started a site about organic eating on a budget, and am looking for similar sites to network with and haven’t found anything yet. I’d love to start a group or alliance. My site is not specifically vegetarian, but I always offer a vegetarian alternative in my recipe section.
Patricia Wooster » Hi, will stop on over and check out your site. Have you joined (or are a member) any of the above mentioned sites?
Feel free to share your username(s), and we will hook up. Thx!
I joined Kirsty today, and Greenbar under the username pwooster123. I’m trying to figure out how to network and do all the marketing stuff that comes with having the site. The writing part is easy. I’d love to start a dialogue with anyone interested in brainstorming or sharing ideas.

I quite like Kirtsy, i’m also a member there. My username is, m38967. The thing with social bookmarking sites is time. One needs to spend quality time at chosen networks, and just participate.
Someone experienced in social network marketing said about “an hour per site” is key. My response was like (wowza!) that is alot of time networking. LOL.
I suppose i could allocate a specific day and time to do it, what do you think of this idea?
We could meet up there once or twice a week, and just participate. Get to know the others, etc. We could also try and round up a few others, and get a small group going, and meet weekly.
Let me know.
Sounds good, but I’ll probably need your help explaining a few things. I’ll play around with the site tomorrow and see if I can become familiar with how it works. I don’t know anything about social network marketing. I thought you just read articles and voted or left comments.
Also, I don’t mean to become to nosy here……but how are your ads doing? I’ve only used Adsense, and it’s not going so hot. I’ve only been doing this for a few weeks, so my learning curve is low. I read problogger.net and doshdosh.com, but it’s a little overwhelming. I wonder if we could get a group together to meet in a chat room and discuss marketing strategy. What do you think?

Sure i would be happy to help with Kirtsy. I’ll be on tommorrow morning, and we can find each other. My handle there is m38967. I’ll look for you.
As for Adsense, it does alright here on the blog. I just wish i had added it sooner, i only added Adsense in December.
Problogger is definitely a solid reference for you. He is great, i like his good grasp of blogging and bloggers. He really knows his stuff. One of my faves.
As for a chat room, i’ll have to see where. Will let you know.
I like Digg also.. for me this is the best social networking site…
I like Care2 as apart from networking there is tons of great info.
The only con is I don’t like many of their Adsense ads which they obviously don’t have control over.

I just found this new green social network called http://mycarbontracker.com
Have you heard about http://www.veganforce.com ?
It’s exclusively for vegans so if you aren’t following the vegan lifestyle I guess it isn’t useful for you.
