Just found out about MotherboardGifts.net, an awesome gift shop where everything is made from recycled pc motherboards. Including these really cool coasters.

The recycled pc motherboard coasters are visually stunning and would make a great conversation piece on any table. I love the design as well, these look pretty well put together and well crafted.

I’m a wanna-be geek and as such love things like this. They have so much more than coasters though – they have adorable heart-shaped pendants, business card cases, gift certificates and lots more.

How about you? Like this type of eco techy goodness or does this not appeal to your sense of geeky decor.

Have you heard of Nikki and David Goldbeck? They’re the incredibly successful duo behind HealthyHighways.com and the media empire behind that site.

The Goldbeck’s have been touting the benefits and fun aspects of a healthy lifestyle for over 3 decades. How do they define healthy living? Through what they call “vegetarian whole foods cuisine”. The idea is simple really, that we should all use ingredients that are whole grain based and organic. You’re probably saying well that isn’t new or noteworthy. But wait! What you don’t know is that the Goldbeck’s were promoting this back in 1983. Yes, 1983! That is definitely noteworthy.

With their publication of American Wholefoods Cuisine, a HUGE vegetarian recipes cookbook that emphasizes:

high-fiber

low-fat

low-sugar

low-salt

whole-grain

vegetarian recipes. 1,300 vegetarian recipes to be exact, David and Nikki Goldbeck put vegetarian cooking, meals and lifestyle on the map.

As for the cookbook itself, wow! that is a massive collection of meat-free meal ideas and this princely volume would site nicely on the shelf of any vegetarian, or really anyone who wants to learn to incorporate more meatless cooking.

Everything from short order to gourmet is included, as is desserts and baked goods. The book was originally printed in 1983, but a second edition was printed in 2006 and is now available online via Amazon. (link above)

Short Publisher Review Below:

They call the whole-foods diet a “Darwinian” one because it’s similar to the diet that our ancestors followed 50,000 years ago–”foods provided by our habitat.” The Goldbecks write, “Just as we cannot put unleaded gasoline in our 1950 Chevy pickup and expect it to run efficiently, modern technological foods may be inappropriate for our prehistoric bodies.” The simplicity of this theory is outstanding, although rushed lifestyles and the ubiquity of convenience foods make it easy to eat overprocessed, unnutritious junk at every meal. With most of its delicious recipes utilizing seven or fewer ingredients, however, American Wholefoods Cuisine can help you take the plunge into a healthier way of feeding your body.

Through their website HealthyHighways.com, the Goldbeck’s share resources, information and fun tidbits on good cooking and good eating.

I asked David a few questions about their website and below is his reply.

1. How long have you been webbing? at least 10 years

2. What is the purpose behind your site? to provide useful info about vegetarian wholefoods cuisine

3. Who is your ideal reader/visitor? people new to vegetarian wholefoods

4. What is your fave veggie meal or dish to eat? (or make)Â squash blossoms (editor note: this recipe is in the book)

5. Name something you wish people knew about you, that you think they don’t? I am a frustrated cartoonist

Cartoonist? Who knew. Do check out HealthyHighways.com and have a look around, I’m sure you’ll find something vegilicious to read.

Let me know if you have the book and if so, what is your fave recipe from it?

This app has to be one of the most brilliant, yet simple ideas I’ve heard of (wish I thought of this one myself).  It communicates your vegetarian needs in 33 different languages so you can express yourself to friends, dinner hosts, and waiters.  You type what you want to say in the app and it outputs text in the language of choice.

Vegans often face the awkward situation of going to restaurants like Applebee’s or TGI Fridays with their friends.  This app takes the pain out of such experiences revealing surprising vegan food choices at even the most meat-centric dining chains.  The app includes over 100 popular restaurants.

And that’s not all.  It also includes a listing of junk-food, snack food, vegan beers, and vegan wine for times when you want to treat yourself.  Bet you didn’t know Skittles are now vegan (gelatin free at last!)!!  But this app could have told you that!

While a bit expensive for many app pickers’ blood, this app and its authors (Clan Thompson) act as the private eyes of the vegetarian world sleuthing out which foods are really vegetarian and vegan.  Over 4,399 food, drugs, personal care items, leather alternatives, cleaning supplies, and more have been covered.

Just wrote about the new and cool recycling widget created by Earth911 over at green blog, Keetsa. And wanted to let my readers here know about it as well.

Happy Earth Day 2009!

In honor of Earth Day 2009 – i have added the Earth 911 recycling widget to my resources page. It allows you to easily search for your local recycling facility through my blog.

Simply enter in your zip code or city and state and the name of the item you’re recycling – then hit the magic enter button. You’re now greeted with a list of local centers that gladly accept the item and will recycle it for you.

I entered in my town’s zip code (38967) and received 2 pages worth of centers who accept (water bottles), now to call them and find out their hours of operation. As i live in a small town, the nearest recycling facility to me is over 52 miles away. Wowza!

I have two bags worth of water bottles that i’ve been meaning to properly dispose of, but am wondering if the long 52 mile drive is going to cancel out any eco benefit. Hmmmn. What to do, what to do?

Oh! and for the record – i don’t buy water bottles. My roommate does, but she has cut down quite a bit.

Wanna try?

Try the recycling widget, and let me know if you find what you’re  looking for. Also if you live in a small town – how far do you or would you drive to recycle something? (hit the comment area)

Live in a small town?

There are things us small town folk can do to be eco responsible, sich as:

reusing

donating

hand down

craft with recycled materials

find another use for an item

and so on

Did you know today is Peanut Butter and Jelly Day? This is an unofficial US holiday created by the Smucker’s brand in 2002.

I found out about PB&J Day via my twitter friend (@amiraelgan), did you know that traditional PB&J Sandwiches are dolled out to the tune of 1,500 per US child by the time he/she reaches adulthood? But the usual white bread pb&j is not terribly healthy, they are full of sugar and processed yuckiness.

THE HEALTHIER PB&J SANDWICH

But it is super easy as Amira mentions, to turn the traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a healthier one. Such as using organic peanut butter (or organic almond butter) and instead of white bread, try whole grain bread and instead of jelly try honey or even a banana.

Many grocers now carry quite the shelf load of jellies and peanut butter jars, including organic varieties fortified with Omega 3 and other nutrients. There is much more than just Smucker’s out there. Try a new variety next time you’re at the grocer.

So celebrate PB&J Day with a quirkier (and healthier) version of the awesome classic.

With Spring not too far off it’s time to think of Spring wardrobe and shoes. I love the Simple brand of sneakers, ever since i spotted one in an Eddie Bauer catalog a few years back.

Aside from the fact that they are eco friendly, i just really dig the look and style of this brand. They tend to be fresh hip and comfy. And just in is the Spring 2009 style called Simple Carat.

The vegan sneaker is green which means it was made using sustainable materials including an organic cotton lining, PET laces, and a rubber outsole made from recycled car tires.

The Simple Carat Sneakercomes in about 6 colors, but my fave is the one pictured above in brown with a pink side stripe.

What is your fave eco or vegan sneaker brand? There are quite a few out there. Share yours below.

Vegan activist queen Alicia Silverstone has officially started her third role at the eco-friendly Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, CA.

Alicia returned to the theater for the world premiere of Time Stands Still by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Donald Margulies.

Directed by Tony award-winner Daniel Sullivan, Time Stands Still is chock full of socio-political issues yet is, in essence, the love story of two juxtaposed couples. One couple is comprised of two journalists struggling with their return to domesticity after visiting the war torn Middle East. In contrast, the other is a couple sorting through their own internal chaos.

Filled with complexity, emotion and surprising humor, Time Stands Still also features Anna Gunn (Deadwood), David Harbour (Revolutionary Road, Quantum of Solace) and Robin Thomas (Murphy Brown).

The theater is in the heart of Westwood Village and close to award-winning vegetarian restaurants including Native Foods. For an added treat Geffen Playhouse teams up with California organic, sustainable vineyards for wine-tasting on Sundays, beginning on February 15.

The show which has already started at the Geffen Playhouse ends March 15th. For more info or to buy tickets visit Geffen Playhouse.
