Here are three alternative tips for going to vegan culinary school:

If you live in or near New York City, the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts is an excellent choice for a vegan culinary school. They offer a comprehensive 619 hour education that incorporates eliminates of vegan cooking, Chinese medicine and the raw food lifestyle. However, for those of us who don’t near New York, finding a vegan culinary school can be challenging.

Vegan Cooking Class

It’s true that most large cities offer culinary schools. Still, although many of these schools are attempting to meet the demand for healthier eating by offering vegetarian or vegan courses, the bulk of their coursework still requires use of meat, dairy and eggs. Vegan culinary schools often require more extensive travel and relocation plans for their students, which in turn requires a greater expense.

If you are in the market for a vegan culinary institution and such relocation is not in the realm of possibilities, consider one of the alternative ways of gaining a vegan culinary education.

1. Consider specializing in raw food.
The primary raw food culinary school is the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute, run by Cherie Soria since 1998. While attendance will obviously depend upon your feelings about the raw food lifestyle, it holds several advantages beyond being vegan friendly. Courses can be taken onsite, offsite or online, and are available to chefs with a variety of cooking abilities, ranging from beginners to experts.

2. Consider a vegetarian culinary school.
If a vegetarian school is closer or more affordable, investigate what their course requirements are. Some vegetarian schools block their meat/egg/dairy portions together, and you may be able to skip that week and still obtain your degree or certificate.

3. Consider a non-traditional degree program.
While traditional vegan culinary schools can be difficult to find, the more nontraditional model certainly isn’t. Schools that offer courses exclusively online or through correspondence courses continue to grow. Some examples include the School of Natural Cookery located out of Boulder, Colorado, the Vegan Culinary Experience and the Vegan Culinary Academy. Though not all of these schools offer degree or certificate programs, many of them do.

Are you health conscious? Or have you been wondering lately about the secrets of a good health? Well, in case if your answer is “yes”, then all you need to do is simply commit yourself to plant food or in short turn yourself into a vegetarian. Today if we carefully observe the scenario, in this fast changing world, it has become tricky to sustain the quality of food. Adding to this, many people are becoming vegetarians as a solution for their health problems. In fact, in the last few years the ratio of people turning their diet into complete vegetarian diet has also increased drastically. Turning your diet into vegetarian is not that difficult as it may appear in the beginning. Initially, it might be difficult to control the temptations specially if you are someone who has never been on ‘vegetable diet’, but if you maintain a little bit of discipline consistently, very soon you may realize the benefits of being vegetarian.

Now there must be several questions in your mind like – Are vegetable diets really healthy? Or do all age group people benefit from a vegetarian diet? Also how one can get significant and fulfilling meal as a vegetarian? So, if you carrying these questions in your mind then here is an answer to all such queries. Basically, the vegetarian diet can be broadly categorized in following categories-

Vegan or completely vegetarians – A diet of fruits, vegetables, seeds, legumes, grains and nuts.

Lacto vegetarians - A diet of plant food along with cheese and other dairy products.

Ovo lacto vegetarians -A diet containing egg along with other plant products.

Semi vegetarians - A diet of plant food, egg, dairy product, fish and chicken but no red meat.

Today, most people complain of high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels. A diet rich in seeds, legume, whole grains and nuts can easily bring these down to a great extent. Plus being a vegetarian can not only improve your digestive system, but also makes it function more efficiently. Adding to this, any vegetarian diet recipe actually helps in reducing the possibility of being infected by cancer. This is generally due to the fact that they are rich in vitamins, and so are able to eliminate free radicals and toxins from the body due to the presence of antioxidant like powers.

For all those who want to turn vegetarian to lose weight it is highly recommended that they take vegetarian weight loss diets. Vegetables have lesser carbohydrates and calories compared to many non-vegetarian products like mutton and red-meat. Even the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood decreases once you adopt a vegetarian diet. In fact, many health experts recommend a special diet which is very useful in preventing fat and decreasing extra cholesterol of the body. Therefore, its better you have a vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet is not just economical or environment friendly but also healthier.

“Animals are my friends and I don’t eat my friends” was how George Bernard Shaw explained his vegetarian diet. Albert Einstein said that the adoption of “the vegetarian manner of living…would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind.”

Whether you are interested in vegetarianism because of lofty moral ideals such as those held by Shaw and Einstein, or because you just want to lose weight and feel better physically you are not alone. Throughout the world there is a growing interest in vegetarianism.

Let’s take a look at the main reasons for being a vegetarian.

Physical: There is a long list of modern diseases that are aggravated by meat eating: colon cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, arthritis and gout top the list.

In addition, many toxins accumulate in meat, as animals are on the top of an agricultural food chain that is heavily dependent on chemicals and pesticides. Added to the chemicals of the environment, are the hormones secreted into an animal’s bloodstream as it faces death. “The flesh of an animal is loaded with toxic blood and other waste products,” was how the Nutrition Institute of America described it.

If that isn’t enough to make you think about trying a vegetarian diet, there is more

You Can Live Without Meat: You can get all the vitamins, minerals and even protein that you need without eating any meat products. A diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products will certainly provide you with what you need. And such a diet is not boring. Have you ever tasted an elaborate vegetarian Indian dinner, or vegetarian Chinese cuisine, or vegetarian Italian food?

While it is possible to be vegetarian and also be fat, it is much harder! A vegetarian diet is not a fad diet that you will do for a period, but something you can follow and enjoy for your whole life.

But there are more reasons why a vegetarian diet makes sense.

Moral and Social Reasons: We all love our cats, dogs, and house pets. We regard them as beautiful creatures who are part of our family. Other animals, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens ducks, etc. are also beautiful creatures and they too want to live. If we can live our lives without killing them, then why should we?

Finally, our Mother earth is small and has limited resources. Feeding humanity with meat takes a big toll on the environment. It makes more sense for us to get nourishment from plant proteins rather than growing grains and then feeding it to animals. Every year millions of people die of hunger in the developing countries, while thousands die of avoidable diseases in the developed countries due to overeating the wrong kind of food. Surely, in the 21st Century, we can do better than this. The spread of the vegetarian diet may be the best way to correct this crazy imbalance.

So, think about it, and try out a vegetarian diet. It will help you to slim down, feel great physically and connect you with the other living beings on planet Earth.

Product Description
Drawing on both the author’s extensive studies of Vedic traditions and her longtime interest in animal rights, Yoga and Vegetarianism shows how the physical and spiritual practice of yoga is historically and structurally tied to a vegetarian lifestyle. When they are used in tandem, she argues, they form a strong framework for physical and spiritual attunement and promote an overall healthy life. Yoga and Vegetarianism emphasizes the importance of understanding of Ah… More >>

This Vegetarian Food Guide is designed to reflect healthy patterns of dietary intake that are not only adequate but promote optimal health. This proposed document is meant to provide a range of portions and a general sense of frequency of servings. Its purpose also includes the promotion of an ongoing discussion among scientists and health-care practitioners, as well as vegetarians coming from different traditions, with the purpose of developing and refining a food guide that promotes optimal health.

Typically, food guides have translated nutritional standards into recommendations for daily food intake in an attempt to meet specific nutritional standards. These standards have traditionally been based on experimental data involving non-vegetarian subjects and have been targeted to the general, non-vegetarian population. In contrast, we believe that studies relating to the dietary patterns of vegetarian populations who enjoy optimal health are valuable and valid sources of information, and can be used in developing a model of healthful eating.

A vegetarian diet can be very healthy, but it is not inherently so. Just cutting meat out of your meals does not automatically assure you all the benefits of the vegetarian diet – in order to be healthy, you need to eat healthy food, vegetarian or not.

The first and most important characteristic of a healthy vegetarian or other type of diet is a wide variety of food. Eating lots of different foods ensures that you get the nutrition you need and that no single food serves as your sole source of a given nutrient. In addition, eating too much of a single food can cause your body to develop sensitivity to that food, which can eventually lead to an allergy. The vegetarian food pyramid, created by researchers at Arizona State University, provides guidelines to the daily amounts of different foods needed for a healthy vegetarian diet.
