Just wrote about the new and cool recycling widget created by Earth911 over at green blog, Keetsa. And wanted to let my readers here know about it as well.

Happy Earth Day 2009!

In honor of Earth Day 2009 – i have added the Earth 911 recycling widget to my resources page. It allows you to easily search for your local recycling facility through my blog.

Simply enter in your zip code or city and state and the name of the item you’re recycling – then hit the magic enter button. You’re now greeted with a list of local centers that gladly accept the item and will recycle it for you.

I entered in my town’s zip code (38967) and received 2 pages worth of centers who accept (water bottles), now to call them and find out their hours of operation. As i live in a small town, the nearest recycling facility to me is over 52 miles away. Wowza!

I have two bags worth of water bottles that i’ve been meaning to properly dispose of, but am wondering if the long 52 mile drive is going to cancel out any eco benefit. Hmmmn. What to do, what to do?

Oh! and for the record – i don’t buy water bottles. My roommate does, but she has cut down quite a bit.

Wanna try?

Try the recycling widget, and let me know if you find what you’re looking for. Also if you live in a small town – how far do you or would you drive to recycle something? (hit the comment area)

Live in a small town?

There are things us small town folk can do to be eco responsible, sich as:

reusing

donating

hand down

craft with recycled materials

find another use for an item

and so on

Have you heard about the Locavore iPhone App? This is a brilliant new app which displays fruits and veggies currently in season where you live.

image via Enjoyment Land

As with many iPhone apps, it is total cool geekines. One thing which makes it geeky sweet is that it automatically picks up your location and with one click, brings up a handy dandy list of various vegetables and fruits currently in season. It also lists those that will soon be available in your neck of the hood.

You can also grab info on local farmers markets. So if you’re planning a trip this weekend to the city market, check with the app and see what is good and new in your hometown.

How does it work? The Locavore iPhone app basically gathers and aggregates info from various trusted web sources, such as the NRDC food miles database and from Local Harvest.

Check out the complete list of features below.

Features:

Automatically detects which state you’re in (currently only covers the US)

Food that’s in season near you

Food that’s coming in season near you soon

Farmers’ markets near you

Browse all 234 fruits and vegetables to see where it is currently growing

Links to Wikipedia articles and Epicurious recipes from each food detail page

Browse all 50 states to see what’s in season in other parts of the US

Wanna try it?

Go to iTunes and download a copy of Locavore

The app is great for vegetarians (and vegans) who want to keep up with local produce. And if you’re traveling and want to know what is in season elsewhere, the phone will pick up the location and let you know.

Let me know what you think?
