So who’s here? Vegans? Occasional “bascksliders?” Tell me what kind of vegetarian you are.

I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian since I was 10. That’s 17 years now. I have backslid a couple times (tuna sandwich or something) but I bet it’s less than 10 times in those 17 years. But all in all, I condsider myself pretty faithful to my decision.

I would like to be vegan, but I have never managed to have the willpower.. I ADORE Miracle Whip, for one thing, and still crave it. I am not picky about veganism at restraunts. Sure, i’ll eat the chese or the eggs. I do love chese. BUT it should be noted that pretty much everythin in my house is vegan. It’s only when I eat out that I let it slide. But I would be careful to not call myself a real Vegan. Almost vegan.. mostly vegan.. but not Vegan.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! LOL.. tell me about your diet.

Many people think of vegetarians as one homogeneous group that just doesn’t eat meat. But nothing could be further from the truth. There are different categories of vegetarians as diverse as the reasons for going vegetarian in the first place.

A vegetarian is generally defined as someone who doesn’t eat meat. But someone who is vegetarian could conceivably eat dairy products such as milk, eggs and cheese. A lacto ovo vegetarian doesn’t eat meat, fish or poultry, but does consume eggs, milk or cheese. A lacto vegetarian consumes milk and cheese products, but doesn’t consume eggs.

A vegan is someone who doesn’t consume any animal product or by-product, including dairy food. They eat only vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes. They also don’t use animal products, such as leather. Vegans also don’t use white sugar because it’s often processed with a substance derived from animal bones that whitens the sugar.

There are other categories within the vegetarian community. Fruitarians, for example, eat only fruit. Their rationale is that fruits, including fruits such as tomatoes, are self-perpetuating and don’t need to be planted to create the food source. They consider it a way of eating that’s most in balance and harmony with the earth, the most natural.

All of the above will eat cooked vegetables, fruits and legumes. There is also a growing movement towards eating only raw or living foods. This based on the assumption that cooking food processes most of the nutrients out of it, and to get all the nutritional value, vitamins and amino acids from food, it’s best consumed raw, or juiced. If cooked at all, it should only be cooked to slightly over 100 degrees, so the nutrients are still retained.

The more restrictive you become with your diet, however, the more educated you need to become to be sure you’re getting all the necessary proteins and vitamins that you need to maintain good health, especially muscle and heart health.

Vegetarian Supplements Click Here

A vegetarian Diet for Cancer

It is related that there is no sure cure for cancer. There’s certainly no way to bypass the development of cancer inside a person’s own body. It is a secret and deadly illness that is not well understood. There have been links made between cancer and high risk behaviors, but there’s no clear recipe for either the development of or the avoidance of cancer. Plenty of the links that have been made in association with some cancers are contained inside someone’s diet. A vegan diet is quite possibly the lowest risk one when it comes to cancer. Whether you are looking out for your future and you haven’t had cancer or you are getting over cancer, a vegetarian diet could be a smart choice for you.

The Flesh Link

Meat has been linked with the risk for developing cancer. Red meat is especially famous for being listed among the offenders. While no one is certain why the beef links to cancer, there are some theories. It might be that red meat is so often griddled or broiled such that it is blackened on the outside.

Charcoal is also suspected to be a carcinogen. When you eat the blackened surface of your burger or steak, you are essentially eating charcoal. Another theory is that the animals themselves are the dangerous component. Cows are often fed hormones which stimulate tissue expansion. It could be that those hormones continue to work after the cow is dead. Rather than stimulating healthy muscle expansion though, they begin to affect healthy cells negatively.

If this were the case [**] it wouldn’t sound right that red beef is more heavily linked to cancer than other meats. Chickens and pigs are also fed supplements to enhance growth. Whatever the cause for the link between diets heavily weighted with meat, that link is there. By getting rid of meat, the possibilities of developing cancer are statistically reduced.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are chemical compounds found in the food that we eat. They’re employed along with your body’s natural defenses to combat disease. They’re especially useful when it comes to promoting healthy tissue growth instead of carcenogenic tissue expansion. Antioxidants are found in several of the things that fit with a vegetarian diet. In addition to junking meats, you can reduce your risk of getting cancer by consuming antioxidants. Spinach as well as blueberries and a number of other plant foods are rich in antioxidants. The excellent news is that these foods are highly tasty and they’re also very flavorsome. Who doesn’t like blueberries?

Green tea is also an excellent source for antioxidants. If you cannot afford any more calories in your daily diet, but you haven’t eaten enough antioxidant rich foods, brew a pot of green tea. Green teas are available decaffeinated or even in pill form. The extra hydration you will get from drinking the tea won’t hurt though.

While there it is said that there’s no cure or sure prevention strategy for cancer, there are a few tricks found in a vegetarian diet that will seriously enhance your chances of avoidance.

Vegetarianism is the practice of not consuming the flesh of any animal (including sea animals) with or without also eschewing other animal derivatives. This includes other food such as dairy products or eggs. Some vegetarians may choose to also refrain from wearing all clothing that has involved the death of animals. This includes items such as leather, silk and fur. Veganism, sometimes called “strict vegetarianism”, excludes all animal products from clothing and food, whether or not their production has involved the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool, silk and down feathers). Vegetarians have varied motivations including religious, cultural, ethical, environmental, social, economic, and health concerns.

Vegetarianism may have been common in the Indian subcontinent as early as the 2nd millennium BC. Hinduism preaches that it is the ideal diet for spiritual progress all its followers need to be vegetarian.

Vegetarians in Europe used to be called “Pythagoreans”,after the philosopher Pythagoras and his followers, who abstained from meat in the 6th century BC. They followed a vegetarian diet for nutritional and ethical reasons.

Vegetarianism in the 19th century was associated with many cultural reform movements, such as temperance and anti-vivisection. Many “new women” feminists at the end of the century were vegetarians

Most vegetarians claim that they became a vegetarian for one of three reasons.

The first reason, which most vegetarians claim, is that they have ethical problems with eating meat. Most disagree with how chickens are debeaked, forced to live in small cages, and are then slaughtered when they do not produce eggs fast enough.

Most vegetarians also disagree with the crowded and stressful environments animals are forced to endure; and the hormone-laden feed utilized to make them grow faster and produce more.

People who become vegetarians for this purpose often draw ethical boundaries in different spots, depending on their personal beliefs. For instance, some staunch vegans will not consume yeast, wear wool, or even eat certain vegetables, such as carrots, that require killing the

plant to harvest.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, some vegetarians–sometimes referred to as pseudo-vegetarians–will actually eat fish and chicken on a regular basis.

The second biggest reason vegetarians claim for not eating meat is that it conflicts with their dietary preferences. Some of these vegetarians simply do not like the texture and taste of meat; others do not eat it because it is high in cholesterol and often contains high concentrations of hormones and preservatives.

The third and smallest group of vegetarians cite environmental reasons for not consuming meat. They complain that consumption of meat causes farmers to continually deforest land to create grazing land for cattle.

In addition to these three major groups, there are a number of other smaller groups of vegetarians who stopped eating meat for entirely different reasons.

Description

Many nonvegetarians ponder what drives vegetarians to give up meat and adopt an entirely different lifestyle. There is no single answer to this question. Nonvegetarians become vegetarians for a number of different reasons – some even for multiple reasons.

What makes your bones strong and your eyes nice and happy? Yep, carrots. So what fun would it be to don a carrot costume this October 31st. This is a funny costume and although a man is featured, this one is also nice on a female. You can wear this carrot costume at just about any function and if you’re looking for a couples costume, this one also fits the bill as your significant other can go as an asparagus or better yet as the dip. A carrot dip. (hehe)

If you’re going for the funny and wacky look this Halloween, try this carrot costume. C’mon look at the face of the guy wearing this costume, does he or does he not look like the life of the party. Wahoo!

The carrot costume for adults is full sized and features the following:

The following is a guest-post submitted by Jason from Rainbow Hearth.

I’m the manager of a Texas Hill Country Bed and Breakfast that caters to vegetarians, among other visitors.

One of the most interesting things about my time here has been observing people and their dietary habits. Of course, not everyone who comes here is vegetarian and not all vegetarians eat healthy. But most people interested in nutrition find this topic fascinating, so I thought I would contribute here, to Groovy Vegetarian, the top five unexpected dietary habits I have observed while working in a food service capacity.

Lachanophobia: Or fear of vegetables. Some people are so afraid of vegetables that the mere mention of anything grown outside, like a carrot or tomato, gives them the shivers and causes their faces to crinkle in utter disgust. I once had a man need to be fed by his wife with an airplane-like motion because the omelet he was eating contained fresh, garden-grown rosemary!

Super High Protein for Older Women: Some people who have had gastric bypass surgery or those on Atkins type diets must have higher amounts of protein, but these types of special restrictions are not what I am referring to. There is a segment of 50 to 60 year-old women who demand huge amounts of animal protein for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It does not matter what is served as long as the animal protein is there. The reasons they give tend to be either they are trying to maintain their strength or simply that they have always eaten that way.

Anti-“Healthy” People: Words like “healthy”, “organic”, and “nutritious” can be enough to make some people refuse to even taste the food. For example, we serve Innocent Chocolate, which is some of the best tasting chocolate most people have ever tasted and it’s sugar-free and dairy-free. I learned early on that many people would refuse to eat the chocolate if I told them it did not contain sugar or dairy before they ate it. We once had a woman who had just complimented us on how good the food was, stop mid-chew and refuse to finish her meal. Why? We told her the vegetables were organic!

Vegetarians Who Won’t Eat Vegetables: Typically, the reason they call themselves vegetarian is because they don’t eat meat. They still eat primarily processed foods like nachos, French fries and Twinkies. Vegetables, however, turn them off just as much as meat.

Diet Soda Addiction: This is a huge problem. There are a number of people who are addicted to diet soda and many of these people are vegetarians. Almost every weekend we have people bring 12 or 24 packs of soda (usually diet) with them and they drink all of them during two-day stays. I’ve even seen vegetarians chug a diet soda, like it was water, everyday after a run.

The saddest part about most of these people is that they are usually somewhat overweight and when I speak with them, they complain about everything from diabetes and high cholesterol to cancer, but don’t make the connection between their health and their poor diet choices.

Editor Note: Thanxs for the interesting article, Jason.
